Steve Graham, Ed.D, is a former classroom teacher. He currently serves as Professor and Currey Ingram Chair of Special Education and Literacy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He is well-known as the co-author of the Handbook of Writing Research, Writing Better, Making the Writing Process Work, Writing Next, and Writing to Read. Dr. Graham is sponsored by Zaner-Bloser. Dr. Young has taught grades 2-6 in Utah, Wyoming,and Venezuela. He is currently a professor of literacy education at Brigham Young University, and is serving as a member of the International Reading Association Board of Directors. Dr. Young received the IRA Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award in 2006 and was inducted into the WORD Hall of Fame in 2007. He is widely published in many journals including The Reading Teacher and Language Arts, and has co-authored and edited several books. He is sponsored by the International Reading Association. Paula Filler is a dynamic presenter and consultant specializing in reading, writing and learning disabilities. A former high school English teacher and elementary and intermediate learning disabilities therapist, she has also served as a professional developer in the areas of literacy, self-advocacy, learning strategies, curriculum development, and disability awareness. Ms. Filler has spoken at numerous regional, state, and national conferences. She is dedicated to helping teachers and students recognize learning as an essential, joyful, and active component of life. Paula will be doing a session on both Friday and Saturday. Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D., is Professor of Education in the Reading and Writing Center at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He has served as a teacher at the elementary and middle school grades. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, struggling readers, and elementary and middle school reading instruction. He has authored over 100 articles and authored or edited 12 books. He is a member of the IRA Reading Hall of Fame. He is sponsored by Scholastic. Michael O. Tunnell, Ed.D, is a Professor at Brigham Young University. He is the well-known author of picture books, nonfiction books, and novels including Mailing May, Halloween Pie, The Joke’s on George, , Brothers in Valor, Wishing Moon, and Candy Bomber. He has co-authored professional books for teachers including Children’s Literature, Briefly and Teaching History through Children’s Literature. Top Copy Books is helping sponsor Dr. Tunnell. Dr. Tunnell's presentation will provide an interesting look at the research that goes into writing both fiction and nonfiction books. Jan Dole, Ph.D., a former elementary classroom teacher, is a Professor and Director of the Utah Center for Reading and Literacy at the University of Utah. Her research interests include comprehension instruction, professional development, adolescent literacy, and coaching. She serves on the NAEP Development Committee and was a member of the RAND Reading Study Group. Dr. Dole is the author of numerous articles, books, and book chapters and directed the Utah Reading Reform Video Project for USOE. P. David Pearson, Ph.D., is Professor in Language and Literacy and Cognition and Development at the University of California-Berkeley, where he served as Dean from 2001-2010. He is the founding editor of the Handbook of Reading Research and also served as an editor of Reading Research Quarterly and the Review of Research in Education. His current research projects include Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading in which reading, writing, and language are used as tools to foster the development of knowledge and inquiry in science. D. Ray Reutzel, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair of Early Childhood Education at Utah State University. Dr. Reutzel has published many articles, book chapters, and books and was inducted into the International Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame in May 2011. Saturday 2:45-3:45: "The World is Flat, Waiting for Superman, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, and Common Core State Standards: Where is all of this heading and what does it mean for the future of literacy education and teachers in schools in the U.S.?"
